“I am dedicated to making architecture and lately, to try […] establishing a dialogue with society so that it can convey needs, concerns, in the end the breeding ground from which we can make architecture.”
Innovation in the design field has a variety of meanings and values. Essentially it can be understood as a quest in itself or as an instrument to achieve a certain result.
Francisco Mangado understands that architecture is a service to society and therefore a possibility to transform it in a positive way. The will of developing an ethical, open minded architecture is reborn with each new planning challenge, a privileged field of exploration and research.
In this sense, he conceives innovation as a tool primarily operated from his skill in the use of materials together with the knowledge and research of its technical possibilities of being applied. From these resources he achieves richness regarding purposely created spaces, and a deep sense of expressiveness regarding his buildings, taking as a basis in all cases the thoughtful analysis of the specific areas as the result of a complex combination of physical, social, cultural, economic and productive factors.
The Football Stadium “La Balastera”, in Palencia, provides to the solid conceptual framework developed by Mangado an element apparently new or at least exacerbated in this specific case. The contribution could be summarized as a more active intervention on the programming stage as the main foundation of the project. In other words, the program becomes a programming act itself. This action highlights a new instrument, an alternative architectural resource that allows a different approach to the social dimension of the final work.
In which way is this line of research continued in other projects?
What is the role of the programming stage in the field of architectural innovation? What are its real possibilities?
